After being a high risk pregnancy due to gestational diabetes, I was told I couldn`t deliver my baby in the pool because of this. I was induced at 38wks and once the labor was established I had to push to have 20mins on/off the monitor and be able to get into the spa for pain relief. Luckily I had a midwife advocating on my behalf and relaxed so much in the water I delivered only 40 mins later!! As the head was crowning I couldn`t leave the water as the doctors demanded and had a beautiful calm water birth that even the doctors enjoyed watching.... yes, this reminded them how a woman should naturally deliver. The peadiatrician was present and after my son was placed on my chest she assessed him and he recieved an apgar of 9.- the highest as they don`t give a 10. After my birth the doctors even approached me and apoligised for not listening to my requests earlier to remove the monitors and get in the spa. They said a woman knows her own body and we should listen to it more!!! HEAR HEAR!! I also feel like you Christine that when we are in labor we are very vunerable and need someone to advocate on our behalf- I was very lucky to have such a wonderful midwife who knew I wanted a natural drug free water birth and did her best to help make that happen- and it did!!
